TripAdvisor voters crown Italian beach as world's best

LONDON -- A remote beach in Sicily, Italy, was named on Thursday as the best beach in the world by a survey of travellers, while a UK beach managed to sneak into the top 10.

Rabbit Beach came top in the first annual awards for the world's best beach based on millions of reviews and ratings by international tourists on the TripAdvisor website.

Rabbit Beach, on the island of Lampedusa off the south coast of Sicily, was described as an unspoiled nature reserve that can only be accessed by boat and one of the few places in the Mediterranean where loggerhead sea turtles go to lay their eggs.

Second place went Grace Bay, Providenciales, in the Turks and Caicos, while Australia's Whitehaven Beach in the state of Queensland came third.

"Rabbit Beach's is clearly a big hit with travellers and it's easy to see why with its stunning turquoise water and white sand," said TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw.

In recent years the southern Italian island of Lampedusa has been in the news as the landing point for tens of thousands of refugees and would-be migrants during the Arab Spring uprisings.

Thousands of migrants risking the dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean Sea in small overcrowded fishing boats died as a result of shipwreck, harsh conditions at sea or a lack of food and water, setting off a crisis that threatened to overwhelm the island.

Shaw said this award would be a boost for Sicily's tourism.

Beaches in Brazil, Spain, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Aruba also featured in the top 10, praised for their white sands and swaying palm trees.

But one surprise in the list, coming 10th, was Rhossili Bay in Swansea, Wales, which beat beaches in Hawaii, the Caribbean and more exotic locations to make the top 10 list.

Rhossili Bay, on the Gower Peninsula, stretches for three miles (5 kms) and its vast expanse of sand backed by sand dunes and towering cliffs make it popular with surfers, paragliders and ramblers.

"We are delighted, but not surprised, that Rhossili Bay has been acknowledged ... We hope that many more visitors continue to enjoy its outstanding natural beauty," David Phillips, leader of the City and County of Swansea, said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for TripAdvisor said the best beach awards were based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on the website gathered over a 12-month period. Following is TripAdvisor's list of the Top 10 beaches in the world:

Study Skills Tips

Academically successful students have one thing in common. They know how to learn, what to learn because they have study skills lesson plans to guide them. In other words, they are the ones who remain constantly inspired and updated.

This comes easily with study skills tips offered by tutors. When teachers promote good study habits to their students, they are doing an immense service to them because they are teaching their students one of the most beneficial life skills. However, the teachers must know how to teach these fundamental skills so that students internalize them.

Teaching study skills is not a once in a blue moon affair. The students must be constantly guided by learning skills, while teachers need to take special interest in designing study skills lesson plans complete with and backed by study skills tips that are measurable and evidenced for learning outcomes.

For example, it is not enough to tell them to get organized and remain that way, but to also let them know the ways they can remain organized such as make and use flash cards, turn off the TV, music and other distractions while studying, take notes in class and revise them after class, and so on. Additionally, one or more study skills must be taught each day as the part of study skills lesson plans.

Each teacher and every student have their own unique way of designing lesson plans because there are literally endless tips and plans. However, it is important that study skills lesson plans address the core issues faced by students, such as silent reading fluency and speed reading, interactive reading and building reading comprehension, building vocabulary, reading non-fiction strategy etc among several others.

The plan must take into account the weaknesses a student demonstrates in any area. These weaknesses can be identified with the help of a pre-designed test or a battery of tests. It is then easy to design a "to do" list for students to constantly practice upon. Additionally, a strategy for reflection indicates whether the student is progressing in the right direction. Finally, the progress should be measurable, monitor-able, and demonstrable for effective outcomes.

As I said earlier, each student is unique by virtue of their family background, home environment, academic and scholastic attainment and several other factors. So, discovering the best approach to study is an individual process. However, assistance from the teachers in designing the strategy ensures positive learning outcomes.

So, teachers should help students identify the activities for them including setting goals, managing time, group tasks. Each student must be helped with lesson plans to focus on that may include a combination of core skills and lesson plans. When teachers take individual interest in students, the students have reasons to work according to plan and perform to their expectations.

When students study according to a plan and absorb skills that promote efficient learning, their academic skills and outcomes improve. However, teachers are expected to not only offer study skills tips but also to actively engage with them in preparing study skills lesson plans for them.

Cardinals gather to determine successor to Benedict as leader of world's 1.2 billion Catholics

Rome is bracing for the faithful to arrive for the election and installation of the cardinal who will succeed Benedict as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. The 85-year-old Pope Benedict announced his resignation earlier this month, stepping down at the end of this month, planning to retreat to a life of prayer in a monastery behind the Vatican's ancient walls.

Some of the faithful were dismayed that Benedict broke with the centuries-old tradition that popes serve until their last breath.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The pontiff told cardinals that he no longer has the mental and physical stamina to vigorously shepherd the church.

He smiled shyly at the sight of the crowd on Sunday, filled with pilgrims waving their countries' flags and holding up banners with words of support. One group of Italians raised a banner which read: "We love you."

:Thanks for turnout in such numbers! This, too, is a sign of the affection and the spiritual closeness that you are giving me in these days." He stretched out his arms as if to embrace the faithful from across the vast expanse of the square. The pope then asked the faithful to "continue praying for me and for the next pope."

Authorities used the traditional Sunday window appearance the event as a kind of trial run for the crowds expected to flock to the square in the coming weeks for the next pope's installation.

Benedict's successor will make his first papal appearance by stepping onto the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica on the square, shortly after puffs of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney tell the world the cardinals have made their secret selection.

Some of the faithful were dismayed that Benedict broke with the centuries-old tradition that popes serve until their last breath.

A youth group Militia Christi (Latin for Christ's Militia) held a hand-painted banner asking the pope to stay. "We are asking him to change his mind. He is the good of the church," youth Giovan Battista Varricchio said.

No official decision has been announced on a date for the conclave to elect Benedict's successor, but the Vatican has suggested that it might start sooner than March 15, the earliest date possible under current rules, which require a 15-20 day waiting period after the papacy becomes vacant.

A debate has begun on whether such a change could be justified and whether it might benefit Rome-based cardinals, who because of their positions at the church's headquarters can count on their acquaintance with cardinals around the world.

"Church law should not be changed on a whim," the Rev. Thomas Reese, an American Vatican expert said. He said changing law "would be disruptive."

7. Working to create a romantic true love relationship means seeking a partner who is also committed to awareness of his or her own truth, or encouraging an existing partner to commit to awareness of his or her own truth.
8. Once you and your partner are both individually committed to truth, you can work to build a relationship that supports truth.
9. In a relationship that supports truth, there is space and respect for both people to have whatever thoughts and feelings they may have, even if those thoughts and feelings are scary or inconvenient.
10. Truth in a relationship does not mean communicating every thought or feeling with your partner and causing unnecessary pain; truth in a relationship means that both partners feel safe to be open and honest about anything that seems important to share.
