Prep for Winter with These Tips for Maximizing Heating Efficiency

Prep for Winter with These Tips for Maximizing Heating EfficiencyThis winter, don't just turn up the dial and hope for heat. Prep your home to make sure you're getting the most out of your heating system. The experts at Stack Exchange DIY tell you how with these ten tips.

Question:

What are some DIY ways to increase the efficiency of a forced air heating system?

? Originally asked by Tester101

1: Hand-held Thermal Sensor

Look for cold spots in your home. A room that tends to stay cold, despite your attempts to keep it warm is a signal of trouble. A nice tool for all such problems is the hand-held thermal sensor you can now buy, like this Black and Decker Thermal leak detector. Just aim it at a spot on a wall, ceiling, etc., and click the button. It gives you the temperature. Now move the sensing spot around, and look for cold spots. This can tell you if you have missing insulation in a wall cavity, or a spot of cold air entry into your home. Use this to decide to add weather stripping to a window or door for example, or to inject foam insulation into a deficient wall cavity, or simply to help you balance warm air flow through your heating system.

2: Programmable Thermostat

Get a programmable thermostat if you don't already have one.

They are cheap, easy to install, and setting it up to turn down the heat a few degrees when you aren't home can make them easily pay for themselves in just a few months.

4: Call A Pro

Neither DIY nor guaranteed to increase efficiency, but worth repeating:

Get your furnace cleaned and inspected by a professional.
They can tune your system and make sure you are burning at peak efficiency.

5: Dampers

Install dampers to direct air flow to the rooms that need it most. This will help if you find yourself raising the thermostat to heat a bedroom, addition, basement, etc.

7: Energy Audit

If you are willing to spend a little money, get an energy audit. It will tell you where you home's biggest losses are, and point out many other places that could use a little work.

8: Seal Electrical Boxes

Seal electrical boxes (usually light fixtures) in the attic, and use spray-foam on electrical conduit entrance holes.

9: Next time you repaint...

Pull off the baseboards on outer walls and use spray foam to seal the wall-floor gap.

10: Seal Your Ducts

Ensure all your ducts are properly sealed - you can use aluminum foil tape to wrap the joints and transitions. Don't use regular "duct tape", it will get brittle and become worthless pretty quickly.

Insulate all exposed supply ducting?there are many DIY products for insulating your ductwork.

Strike idles busiest Port of Los Angeles pier

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Striking workers shut down the largest terminal at the Port of Los Angeles for a second day Wednesday, and the job action later widened to close three terminals at the Port of Long Beach, threatening to paralyze the nation's busiest port complex.

About 70 clerical workers struck the APM Terminals operations on Pier 400 at Port of Los Angeles on Tuesday, raising the ante in a 2?-year-old contract battle over union claims that management has been outsourcing well-paid jobs out of state and overseas.

Only a handful of workers were picketing early Wednesday but dockworkers were honoring the walkout and the terminal remained closed, although only two cargo ships were affected, LA port spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.

"It's not crippling the port by any means. We've got eight other container terminals up and running," he said.

The port is not operating at its peak because shipment of Christmas goods ended several weeks ago.

"The holiday goods are either already in the stores or in warehouses," Sanfield said.

Port of Long Beach officials said Wednesday afternoon that a labor action there had shuttered operations at three of six container terminals.

About a quarter of a billion dollars in goods travel through the three terminals every day, Long Beach port spokesman Art Wong said.

Like Los Angeles, Wong said the Long Beach port's longshoremen were honoring the clerical workers' strike, and didn't cross picket lines to work.

Los Angeles and Long Beach together have the nation's busiest port complex. The twin harbors handled $273 billion worth of cargo last year.

The strikers are from the Office Clerical Unit of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union's Local 63. Their contracts with 14 companies who operate most of the terminals at the twin ports expired in June 2010.

Years of contract renewal negotiations ended with talks breaking off on Monday, leading to the walkout.

An arbitrator ruled Tuesday night that the union was negotiating in bad faith with shippers and the strike was invalid. However, the order was ignored. A second arbitrator also was expected to rule within two days on whether to uphold that order.

Clerical workers held brief strikes in 2010 and 2011 that ended after arbitrators ruled them improper.

For now, however, "they're on strike and picket lines are being respected," said Craig Merrilees, an ILWU spokesman in San Francisco.

The union risks a "dangerous escalation" if they continue to ignore the order, said Stephen Berry, lead negotiator for the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Employers Association, which represented the 14 terminal operators in contract talks.

"It could lead to a spread of the job actions beyond just one terminal" and that, in turn, could prompt shippers to lock out employees, Berry said.

Still, it was unlikely that either side would want a repeat of a bitter 10-day lockout at a number of West Coast ports in 2002 that caused an estimated $15 billion in losses.

At issue is the union's contention that terminal operators have outsourced jobs to lower-paid paperwork pushers in the U.S. and places such as Costa Rica, India and Taiwan. A union release contended that 51 clerical jobs have been lost in the past five years.

Thanks to computer technology, shippers can easily "push buttons and maybe even get tax breaks" by moving work to other regions, Merrilees said.

Companies have refused to acknowledge there is an outsourcing issue, Merrilees said.

The negotiating group for the shippers denied that any local union clerical jobs were outsourced and said in a statement that the 51 workers had quit, died or retired with full benefits in the past three years.

Their positions weren't filled because there was no "business need," said a statement from the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Employers Association.

In addition, the companies have offered to guarantee current union clerical workers their jobs for life, Berry said.

He claimed that the union wants contract language to permit "featherbedding" ? the practice of requiring employers to call in temporary employees and hire new permanent employees even when there is no work to perform.

RIM loses in arbitration with Nokia, may have to pay royalties on BlackBerrys with WiFi

Thorsten Heins of RIM and Stephen Elop of Nokia

Nokia and RIM already have a troubled history whenever they come into contact, so it's no surprise that what truces they do have are fraying at the edges. Thanks to filings, we now know that RIM has lost a Swedish arbitration proceeding where it tried to extend a 2003 patent cross-licensing deal with Nokia to include WiFi devices; the wireless technology isn't covered, the arbitrator says, and RIM now has to either pay royalties worldwide or risk seeing its devices yanked from the market. Nokia isn't wasting any time pressuring the team in Waterloo into coughing up -- it's taking steps to enforce the decision in Canada, the UK and the US. RIM has so far turned down any comment, although it's more likely that their firm will cut a deal rather than risk a sweeping ban. Consider it another of the many hurdles for RIM to jump on the road to January 30th.

Black Friday Sales And Stocks - Business Insider

Retail sales during Thanksgiving weekend ? the traditional start of the holiday shopping season ? climbed 13% as more shoppers hit the stores and spent more money, according to the National Retail Federation, wildly exceeding consensus estimates.

The news helped to lift stocks on Friday, making for the strongest week for stocks since early June 2012.

Retail sales matter to the stock market mainly because they reflect the health and sentiment of the consumer and investor [Figure 1], but also because they contribute to the growth of the economy and corporate profits.

The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index, which cannot be invested into directly. Past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Does a Black Friday for retailers assure a green holiday season for investors? Not necessarily; there have been years where positive fourth quarter retail sales did not bring positive results for the stock market. In fact, there is not even much of a relationship between how well holiday sales results fare against forecasts and stock market performance.

To illustrate this point, over the past 20 years, the performance of the S&P 500 during the period from Thanksgiving through year-end was about the same (2.7% vs. 2.5%) when retailers exceeded the widely followed forecast from the National Retail Federation compared to when they were in line, on average [Figure 2].

1 Holiday season overall sales forecast from the National Retail Federation

2 Thanksgiving through year-end five-week average of year-over-year sales growth from International Council of Shopping Centers

3 S&P 500 Index price change over period of holiday sale

The question of what Black Friday means for investors actually has the relationship backwards; it is instead the gain in the stock market that is the predictor for retail sales during the holiday season. This makes sense since the stock market is one of the best barometers of consumer confidence and, if it is rising, it stands to reason that consumers are feeling a bit more confident and willing to spend.

With the S&P 500 Index having gained 12% this year, it should be no surprise that early reports of sales this holiday season have been solid:

  • The National Retail Federation reported Thanksgiving weekend sales up 12.8% over last year. Shoppers spent $59 billion over the weekend, with the average shopper spending $423.
  • Online sales trends have been very strong, with sales estimated up 26% from last year on Black Friday. Tight inventories may have forced many to go online in search of favored styles and colors. Strong online sales have prompted shipping companies to issue solid outlooks, with UPS predicting a 6.2% increase over last year and boost seasonal hiring by 10%. Federal Express is forecasting a gain of 12% between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What Is Driving All This Demand From Consumers?

  • A rising stock and housing market has helped consumers feel wealthier, plus the modest increase in jobs and paychecks may have given consumers the confidence to boost purchases during the holiday season.
  • Consumers? balance sheets look a lot better. The percentage of income consumed by financial obligations, such as a mortgage, rent, auto, and student loans has fallen to a level not seen since well before the financial crisis and is below the long-term, 30-year average.
  • Consumers are starting to borrow again. U.S. consumer debt has fallen by about $1.3 trillion since the pre-recession peak, according to the Federal Reserve, with credit card debt being one of the most sharply contracting categories. But in four of the last six quarters, American households? credit card borrowing has increased after having fallen for 11 consecutive quarters.

Stocks, particularly those of the retailers, have reflected the improving consumer incomes and balance sheets, and now sales may begin to reflect the release of pent-up demand. While stocks are already signaling gains in sales this holiday shopping season, the performance of retailer stocks has been pointing to solid gains with the S&P 500 Retail industry group of stocks posting a gain of 2.4% relative to the decline of -1.8% in the S&P 500 so far during the fourth quarter.

However, one weekend does not make a season. Stocks have slumped so far in the fourth quarter, and retail sales have yet to break out of their slump. The widely watched weekly measure of retail sales from the International Council of Shopping Centers has averaged a relatively consistent year-over-year gain of 2-3.5% during the second half of 2012. If sales do begin to accelerate, it may be good news for the economy. A more confident consumer leads to more confidence in corporate America, which may lead to brighter prospects for job and economic growth in 2013.

Analysis: Euro zone debt forgiveness lies ahead in Greek mire

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Within minutes of euro zone finance ministers reaching a deal to cut Greece's debt late on Monday, commentators on Twitter were dismissing it as another exercise in "kicking the can down the road".

To an extent that is true. Under the agreement, the euro zone and the International Monetary Fund will give Greece two more years to reach its budget goals and will find another 44 billion euros ($57 billion) to keep the country afloat in the meantime.

But while a degree of can-kicking may be going on, there was a critical element in Monday night's deal that goes a lot further than any other step taken so far in the debt crisis to get Greece back on its feet.

Implicit was an understanding that Greece will undergo some form of official-sector debt restructuring - with euro zone countries forgiving a portion of Greece's debt - at some point in the future, the sort of last-ditch measure usually reserved for impoverished states in Africa and Latin America.

At a news conference in the early hours of Tuesday, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble came closer than he has ever done before to publicly acknowledging that creditors face such an eventuality - a move that will be very hard for the likes of Germany, Finland, Austria and the Netherlands to take.

"When Greece has achieved, or is set to achieve, a primary surplus and fulfilled all of its conditions, we will, if need be, consider further measures for the reduction of the total debt," he said, looking weary after 13 hours of negotiations.

The timing and reference to a primary surplus are important.

The Greek economy is forecast to return to growth during 2014 and to achieve a primary budget surplus - the balance before deducting the cost of debt financing - of 4.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2016.

By the end of that year, the EU-IMF assistance program should be over and Greece will in theory be on its own, financing itself in the financial markets in the normal way.

Monday night's deal took care of the extra financing Greece will need between 2014 and 2016 and set out a series of steps the euro zone and Greece will take to get its debt level down from around 190 percent of GDP next year to 124 percent by 2020.

But what it didn't set out in precise detail is how Greek debt will go on falling, from 124 percent of GDP in 2020 to 110 percent in 2022 and 88 percent in 2030, as agreed during the talks.

And it didn't say how Greece is expected to win back market confidence in 2016 even though its debt level that year is still expected to be 175 percent of GDP.

The answer is a combination of lower interest rates and longer maturities being applied to loans to Greece, Athens paying down more of its own debt thanks to growth and the potential for euro zone states to write down their loans.

"Euro area member states will consider further measures and assistance, including lower co-financing in structural funds and/or a further rate reduction in the Greek loan facility if necessary," said Olli Rehn, the commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, again hinting at the possibility of a more fundamental overhaul of debt at some future point.

A European Union official closely involved in the discussions on Greece said there was a general unwillingness among euro zone countries to acknowledge that they may have to forgive some of the 127 billion euros they have so far lent to Greece, even if all of them know the issue can't be avoided forever.

In order to make Greece's debt sustainable in the long term, the IMF has determined that it must be cut to around 120 percent by 2020 and 110 percent by 2022. But there is no guarantee those levels will be sustainable on those dates.

As a result, the prospect of a debt writedown has to remain, especially as the euro zone countries, who will soon be responsible for around three quarters of all Greek debt, have said time and again that they will do what is necessary to keep Greece afloat and in the euro zone.

The EU official said the best option would be for euro zone countries to bite the bullet and write down 40-50 billion euros of loans to Greece in 2016 or shortly afterwards, so that its debt-to-GDP ratio is aggressively reduced and the country can more easily return to financial markets.

But that is unlikely to happen, since no member state wants to write down any Greek debt, the cost of which would be born by taxpayers. Each state will do everything possible to ensure that any writedown, if it must happen, is as small as possible.

"If you were really going to help Greece, you'd write off enough debt to get the ratio down to 60 percent of GDP, which is a decently sustainable level," the official said. "But that's never going to happen. No one's going to buy that."

Instead, the possibility of debt forgiveness will hang over the euro zone for the next four years and will, whether countries like it or not, have to be tackled at some point.

GOP senators 'troubled' after Rice meeting

United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice's attempts to make nice with a trio of Republican senators who have criticized her response to the Sept. 11 terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, seem to have backfired.

The senators said they left their face-to-face meeting with Rice this morning "more concerned" and "significantly troubled."

The three Republicans, Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, said that not only did Rice, who was joined by Acting CIA Director Mike Morell, not answer all their questions about the attack but did little to assuage their overall worries.

"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got, and some that we didn't get concerning evidence that was overwhelming leading up to the attack on the consulate," McCain said.

"The concerns I have are greater today than before, and we're not even close to getting the basic answers," Graham said.

Today's meeting was seen as part of Rice's Capitol Hill "charm offensive," as her possible nomination to be the next secretary of state has met with some vocal opposition ? especially from McCain, Graham and Ayotte, who still seemed to steer clear of questions about whether they would stand in the way if Rice was nominated.

"Before anybody can make an intelligent decision about promoting someone involved in Benghazi, we need to do a lot more," Graham said. "To this date, we don't have the FBI interviews of the survivors conducted one or two days after the attack. We don't have the basic information about what was said the night of the attack ... as of this date."

Graham compared the situation to 2006, when Senate Democrats blocked the nomination of John Bolton, President Bush's choice for U.N. ambassador.

What the senators seemed to find most problematic was Rice's statement on the Sunday morning news shows days after the attack. At first, she said it was a "spontaneous" attack and not a terrorist attack.

Ayotte said that in today's meeting Rice called the information she first gave to the American people wrong.

"It's certainly clear from the beginning that we knew that those with ties to al Qaeda were involved in the attack on the embassy, and clearly the impression that was given, the information given to the American people, was wrong," Ayotte said,

Ayotte said that as the U.N. ambassador should have stepped up and said that she couldn't go on the Sunday morning news shows and talk about the attack if that was the case.

Graham also said it would have been better not to give any information at all.

"If you can give nothing but bad information, isn't it better to give no information at all? It was unjustified to give the scenarios as presented by Ambassador Rice and President Obama three weeks before an election."

Rice, defending herself in a statement following the meeting, said: "We explained that the talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: There was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi. While, we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case, the intelligence assessment has evolved. We stressed that neither I nor anyone else in the administration intended to mislead the American people at any stage in this process, and the administration updated Congress and the American people as our assessments evolved."

Rice is expected to meet with Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., later today. A close ally of McCain (Lieberman endorsed him for president in 2008), Lieberman has not been as quick to criticize Rice.

(AP) ? Bomb threats to 30 courthouses and other government buildings across Tennessee forced many to be evacuated Tuesday, including the federal building in Memphis, but authorities said no explosives were found.

Tennessee became the fourth state to deal with similar bomb hoaxes. One targeted 28 courthouses in Oregon and similar threats were reported in Nebraska and Washington this month.

Nine threats were reported in West Tennessee counties ? including the Memphis federal building ? seven in Middle Tennessee and 14 in East Tennessee, said Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokeswoman Dalya Qualls.

No arrests have been made in Tennessee and authorities had searched about 14 courthouses by Tuesday afternoon.

Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, said the threats were made by telephone to court clerk offices. "It's been going on all morning," said Heidt.

The threats to courthouses in Ashland City and Clinton were made by men.

"It was just a man's voice saying simply if this is the Cheatham County Courthouse you're about to be blown up, and it startled me. So I just said I'm sorry. I tried to get him to repeat himself and that's when it just cut off and I thought 'Oh my,'" Cheatham County deputy clerk Rebecca Nicholson told WTVF-TV.

Anderson County Clerk Jeff Cole told The Knoxville News Sentinel that a man's voice simply said "There's a bomb in the building" and hung up.

The FBI is working closely with state authorities and will pursue federal charges if necessary, said Joel Siscovic, the bureau's spokesman in Memphis.

The federal building in Memphis houses the federal court and offices for the Department of Justice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen. It was cleared around 9 a.m. for a couple of hours while authorities checked it.

Police temporarily blocked a trolley line that ran by the federal building in Memphis and brought in a dog to search the building before letting people return around 11 a.m.

According to Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph, a woman called police around 8:30 a.m. and said she had information that someone was going to blow up the county criminal justice center, the federal building and a main U.S. Post Office in the city.

All three locations were searched and nothing was found, she said.

BMSR's latest album, Cobra Juicy, is one of the year?s best ? a collection of songs built around Reagan-era analog synths and tape machines mingling with everything from Beck guitar licks to the bass lines and buzz saws of a midnight Justice?set. You can hear it live in a city near you. And if you like it, buy the man a bourbon. Small batch, of course. ??

Have you had any jobs in the food service industry?
I was a busboy at an upscale Italian place for one day. The owner was weird, the manager was weird and everyone just sucked, so I just didn?t come back.

So that?s your food career right there?
I actually always wanted to work at a pizza place and I still kind of do, but I never did it. Maybe one day, just for fun.

What?s your fascination with pizza?
It?s not even the pizza. I guess I just created a fantasy in my head where hanging out with friends, driving around and delivering pizzas to all these weird people in town would just be so much fun. I?m at that point where I definitely don?t need to get any kind of job, but want that all to be kind of my hobby.

Do you like pizza? Do you make it at home?
I don?t make it, but I like it. I?m getting pickier as I get older I think. When you find really good shit, it?s hard to then go back. There?s this one place in town that?s about a half-hour outside of the city that not a lot of people know about. The crust is almost a pastry ? it?s buttery and the sauce is really sweet. I?ve never had anything even similar to it. It?s called Jioio?s.

Tell me more about the dining scene in Pittsburgh? It?s pretty underrated and dare I say unknown.
Yeah, you just have to dig in. Over the past two years some things have really popped up. I wouldn?t say it exploded here or anything, and it?s not like you have a shitload of options. But you can find one or two of each type of food that is amazing, even better than other cities. I don?t want to start a controversy, but I think some of the best things that I?ve had here are better than I?ve had in New York.

Let?s start some controversy?
We have this barbecue called Union Pig and Chicken. I?m going to guess that people around here would consider [Kevin Sousa] our local star chef because he also owns Salt of the Earth and runs this hot dog place. Union Pig and Chicken is hands-down the best barbecue I?ve ever had, including in the South.

And you?ve toured the South, like Texas and Mississippi?
Yeah. I?d say the second best I?ve ever had was in St. Louis ? I can?t remember the name of the place ? but I?ve been everywhere in the country and this guy has the best barbecue. It?s not even close.

What food item that Pittsburgh is known for?
Well, that?s the thing. I?m not proud of what Pittsburgh is known for. I hate this because any time I have friends who are coming through, they are like, ?We have to go to Primanti Brothers!? And that?s fucking gross. Have you heard of this place?

Yeah, it?s like a place that you see on The Food Network?
Probably, I?m sure. It?s what we?re most famous for, which is really any kind of shitty sandwich covered in coleslaw and fries. They?re open all night, which is their thing, but it?s just trash. Greasy food is great, but they don?t even do that well [laughs]. I?m going to get killed if anyone from Pittsburgh sees this!

It?s like delis getting a lot of press in New York, but they all fucking suck. What are some of your favorite cities around the world for the food?
Number two would be Philly and that?s mainly because one of my best friends from high school works at a few restaurants there. He works at Osteria and Vetri. He knows how to show us around, so I?m a little biased towards that city. In terms of finding stuff on my own, my favorite city is Chicago.

Where do you like eating in Chicago?
I?m not a big burger guy or anything, but Kuma?s is pretty fucking phenomenal. I?ve never had a burger that good anywhere else. Then the pizza ? if you go outside of that typical Chicago pizza ? there?s a place called Pequod?s. The guy who started Pequod?s left and is doing his own thing at Burt?s. Pequod?s is amazing and most people would say it?s better, but I like Burt?s even more because it?s more eccentric and apparently the guy picks up all of the shit on the way in to work. Everything is super fresh and it?s made with care because he?s the only one back there.

What food and drink is on your tour rider when you?re on the road?
I like to go really simple. The hardest thing to find when you?re on tour and waiting at a venue is fruits and vegetables, and that?s all that I want. I need blueberries, avocados, broccoli, celery, strawberries and shit like that. And you don?t always get it.

You sound like you?re pretty health-conscious? Do you drink?
I?m pretty healthy. I like a good cocktail or a really good liquor. If it?s something different, I?m totally down.

What kind of cocktails do you like?
My friend in Philly designs the alcohol menu for the Vetri restaurants and got me into Negronis hardcore. We got a barrel here at our house and I?ve been aging my own kind of Negronis. Artichoke Negronis.

Oh, with Cynar?
Yeah, yeah.

Why barrel-age a cocktail?
It just mellows out. Especially a drink like a Negroni. Campari is fucking rough. It?s like ehhhh and gets into your throat. The barrel takes the edge off of it and totally smooths it out. It?s really nice. We got into that because there?s a place in Pittsburgh called Meat and Potatoes and they started doing barrel-aged Manhattans and Negronis recently, and it?s the best shit ever.

What kind of gin do you use in your Negronis?
We?ve still been working on the best. Since we only have one barrel, we can only make it once a month. We?re still working it out. We?ve tried every kind. The latest batch was Bombay and that was pretty good.

Bombay is good. I personally like Beefeater because it has great juniper and isn?t too citrusy.
My favorite is Hendrick?s, but it?s too much for a Negroni.

What other cocktails do you like to make at home or order on the road?
I just like really simple stuff usually. When we?re on the road, unless we?re at an amazing cocktail place, I?d rather get something straight. Some people just go overboard ? even when you order something normal that you think is simple, it?s all sugared up. It?s just nasty. We?ll just try to find like one Prohibition-era kind of place in town and get one thing that?s really good. The best drinks that we?ve probably ever had were at Village Whiskey in Philadelphia. The burger is actually almost at Kuma?s level too.

Do you cook at home?
Not really. I like to eat stuff really plain ? cut up an avocado, eat some celery. I think the most complex I like to get is like broccoli with pasta sauce. I like to eat really clean.

Why eat clean?
I don?t know. I like to run a lot and when you?re digesting easier, it makes everything go smoother and I feel better. Right now, I?m so tired ? we just got home from tour yesterday ? I?m so tired from changing up my routine and eating so much crap. I couldn?t wait until this morning to just have blueberries and flaxseed. I also feel that since I?m not a great cook, I?d rather just once a week pay someone at a restaurant who is really good at it [laughs].

Do you run competitively?
It?s just for my own personal sense of accomplishment. I?ve never been in a race but am definitely working on getting my times to a really good spot.

Chefs really like your music. Have you heard that before?
I haven?t heard that but I also don?t know any chefs [laughs]. I?ve definitely never heard it in any of the restaurants that I go around town.

You have a lot of food imagery in your song titles. Does food play a role in the creative process?
It?s not necessarily that, but I always like the song titles to be a major part of what the whole concept and art of it is. I like to create titles that you can?t really place ? but when you think about them and combine what I?m saying ? it creates its own new thing. I?ve always liked adding some kind of taste into my titles because if you can taste the title, you just think of it in a different way.

Halle Berry's ex: I was the victim in fistfight

Gabriel Aubry and Halle Berry in October 2009.

LOS ANGELES --?Halle Berry's ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry on Monday won a restraining order against the actress' current lover, as the two men fought in the Los Angeles courts over who started their Thanksgiving Day brawl.

Releasing photos of himself with a black eye and cuts to his face, Aubry claimed that he was the victim in the November 22 punch-up with Berry's fianc?, French actor Olivier Martinez, in the driveway of her Los Angeles house.?

"I suffered numerous injuries as a result of the attack, including a fractured rib, multiple bruises on my face and a number of cuts which required stitches," Aubry said in court papers, alleging that Martinez had threatened the day before to kill him.?

"It all happened so fast and so suddenly; I did not see Mr Martinez's actions coming and thus I was not ready for it and was not able to defend myself," Aubry wrote.?

Aubry, Martinez, and the Oscar-winning "Monster's Ball" actress have been embroiled for months in a custody fight over Berry's 4-year-old daughter, Nahla. Berry wants to take the daughter she had with Aubry to live with her and Martinez in France, but a Los Angeles judge denied that request earlier in November.?

Aubry claimed in his request for a restraining order on Monday that Martinez told him, "You cost us $3 million," while the French actor punched and kicked him on Nov. 22.?

Aubry, a Canadian model, was arrested last week for battery after the fist fight, and ordered to stay away from Berry, the child, and Martinez.?

Neither man has been yet been formally charged in the case.?

Prostate Cancer Workshops RFP | Indiana Cancer Consortium

Excluding all types of skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Indiana men and is the second leading cause of cancer death for men. During 2004-2008, according to the Indiana Cancer Facts and Figures 2012, there were approximately 3,954 cases of prostate cancer and 602 deaths per year in Indiana. African-American men are more likely to develop prostate cancer than any other racial or ethnic group and they are more than twice as likely to die from the disease as white men.

Due to the uncertainties in prostate cancer screening techniques and outcomes, most?organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend?informed decision making. Informed decision making is defined by the CDC as when a man:

  • Understands the nature and risks of prostate cancer.
  • Understands the risks, benefits, and alternatives to prostate cancer screening.
  • Participates in decision making at a level he desires.
  • Makes a decision consistent with his preferences and values, or defers the decision to a?later time.

An ICC partner, the Cancer Early Detection Section at the Indiana State Department of Health, has?announced a funding opportunity for the planning and implementation of prostate cancer educational workshops that provide Indiana men, aged 40-65, with an overview of prostate cancer, risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening, and the importance of informed decision making. Please note, discussing informed decision making is a requirement in order to receive grant awards. Grant awards of up to $2,499 will be reimbursed to selected organizations for conducting these workshops.

Arafat's body to be exhumed on Tuesday in murder inquiry

RAMALLAH (Reuters) - The body of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will be exhumed on Tuesday, eight years after his death, in an investigation to establish if he was murdered, a Palestinian official said on Saturday.

A French court opened a murder inquiry in August into Arafat's death in Paris after a Swiss institute said it had discovered high levels of radioactive polonium on his clothing, which was supplied by his widow, Suha.

Tawfiq al-Tirawi, in charge of the Palestinian committee overseeing the investigation, told reporters in Ramallah on Saturday "it is a painful necessity" to exhume the body of Arafat, who came to symbolize the Palestinian quest for statehood throughout decades of war and peace with Israel.

Tirawi said the Palestinians had "evidence which suggests Arafat was assassinated by Israelis". Israel denies any involvement.

The exhumation and renewed allegations of Israeli involvement could stir further tension between the Palestinians and Israel, which are observing a truce after a week of fierce fighting in Gaza.

Any positive results for polonium could rekindle Palestinian hostility toward Israel and suspicions that a local collaborator may have poisoned him under directions from the Jewish state.

Allegations of foul play have long surrounded Arafat's demise. He died in a Paris hospital in November 2004, a month after being flown, seriously ill, from his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

French doctors who treated him in his final days said they could not establish the cause of death, and no autopsy was performed in deference to his widow's request at the time, when Arafat died at 75.

Eight years is considered a limit to detect any traces of the deadly radioactive substance, according to the Swiss Institute of Radiation Physics.

Tirawi said Arafat's body would be exhumed from its limestone mausoleum in Ramallah, away from the public or media presence, and separate samples will be taken by the French and Swiss forensic teams, as well as a Russian team of experts, who the Palestinians invited to help with the examination.

After the investigation "the body of leader Abu Ammar will be returned (reburied) in a military ceremony that is befitting him as a leader of the Palestinian people", Tirawi said, using Arafat's non de guerre.

Tirawi said results could take up to several months to be announced.

Empowered Communities And Accountable Health Systems: Need Of

Even as we deliberate upon newer strategies for controlling communicable diseases like tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases like diabetes we tend to overlook the tremendous role of an empowered community and a working primary healthcare system in achieving our goal of a healthy society. The recently concluded43rd Union World Conference On Lung Health?re-emphasized the importance of these very pertinent issues.?In a country like India, despite well qualified doctors and excellent health policies for its citizens?like the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) ? accessing even basic public health care facilities is a nightmare for most people. Most of an average Indian?s health spending is out of pocket, with the government spending much less on the health of its citizens than they themselves. The malaise of ineptitude pervades everywhere? whether it is general medical facilities or specialized programmes like maternal/child health, and TB control. For any meaningful development, the primary healthcare services in India need to be made more accountable in their day to day working. ?Although we have a wonderful DOTS strategy in place, it has not been utilized to its fullest potential by India?s pluralistic health set up comprising a small under-performing public sector and a large uncontrolled private sector.?Dr Nevin Wilson, Regional Director of the South-East Asia Office of?International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), rues that one out of every 8 patients notified by Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) is still diagnosed in a medical college rather than a primary health centre. He says that, ?There are several reasons which make a patient go to a tertiary centre for diagnosis of a simple disease like TB. The average daily wage earner does not seek health care till that cough stops him/her from working. And then the aim is to stop coughing and going back to work without understanding the implications of the disease. So it becomes important for health services to support the patients by at least being respectful to them and explaining to them how to deal with their health problems. It is high time also, that the healthcare providers start seeing and recognizing TB. Right now patients who are coughing for a long time are often not even suspected to have TB when they visit a healthcare provider. Usually it takes about one to two months before they come to a DOTS centre and all this while they transmit the disease to others and also become sicker. So it is a matter of accountability. Right now our public healthcare system (right from the primary health centres to tertiary care centres) is not accountable to the communities it serves. This is a big challenge.? Dr Anil Kapur, President of the?World Diabetes Foundation, also agrees that primary healthcare in India is disorganized?health workers are poorly trained, overburdened, ll equipped and under resourced?and there is no accountability. He warns that, ?It is about time that the central and state governments in India prioritize health of the country and start spending more on basic health services. An unhealthy nation will be an unproductive nation and all the gains of the last 2 or 3 decades in terms of the economic development will be completely wiped out if we do not take action on building good quality care and services at the primary health care level. There has been an effort through the National Rural Health Mission scheme and we need to push that agenda even further and make it stronger. Prioritizing maternal health and vaccination programmes for children, targeting infectious diseases like TB in terms of service delivery, and dealing with chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension are fundamental to preventing a future health crisis. All these and other problems (like cancers, HIV, malaria) will only get solved when the government starts to tackle primary health care by developing capacity and making people answerable.?

Community awareness and participation can go a long way in help making health systems more accountable by demanding better services.?Carol Nyirenda, the TB HIV activist from Zambia, who was one of the over 30 community representatives at the conference, feels that no amount of TB control will work without the active engagement of the affected community. Members of the community will have to be empowered and take ownership of the TB programme. According to her, ?Any policy and structure cannot be complete without community inputs and voices. For this, we have to de- stigmatize TB and empower TB patients by giving them enough basic knowledge about the disease from a public health point of view. TB has remained with doctors and scientists for too long. Unless the TB patients and community are informed in simple language about TB there can be no meaningful TB activism. In HIV, even persons like me from the affected community, with no medical background, have a basic understanding about the clinical aspects of HIV as it has been explained to me in simple terms. This makes it easier for me to argue with other stakeholders across the table to demand better facilities for my community. Unfortunately, this has not happened in TB and TB patients are not empowered with enough medical information about the disease. They do not even know the names of the drugs they have to eat, they do not know why they have to take them without a break and complete the treatment even though they may start feeling better after sometime. This dis-connect has to break down. There has to be simplification of messages which convey all information about TB. The process has already begun, although slowly. If TB patients realize the gravity of the situation and know that TB can kill and devastate, they will start advocating for their right to access treatment and better drugs. Sickness should not come in the way of becoming an advocate; rather it could be a result of it. In Africa we find more concrete action on TB activism. We have very few activists from India and there should be many more. We need to build a good cadre of informed and trained community advocates.?

Dr Wilson also would like the local population and community to be empowered enough to question the public healthcare provider for laxity in services?non- functioning laboratories, non- availability/absence of staff, shortage of drugs, irresponsible behaviour of health workers. He feels that right now the system puts a barrier on the community in being able to demand what is rightfully and legally theirs? patients cannot question the doctor for not arriving at the clinic on time, although it is their right that the doctor is available during working hours and listens to them and treats them with respect. Dr Wilson avers that, ?It is the people from the community who will have to be the game changers. We have to help people to become empowered and the process has begun through projects like Axshaya. Mass media can also help in improving awareness about TB and other diseases by informing people through television ads and jingles. All this will immediately have a positive effect.?

Dr Kapur too believes in utilizing the untapped potential of community health workers by giving them good training, the right information, proper equipment and enough resources. He rues that, ?We are talking of giving the Akash computer tablets free to school children in India, but if the same resources were used for community health workers, it would be a tremendous asset in terms of the ability to provide interactive education and to record/transfer data and information. It is also about community and people mobilization to understand the role of good governance.?

Let us remember that providing basic health services to the people is not an obligation but a duty on part of the government, and it is the right of people to get it. Communities will have to demand that healthcare systems become accountable to the people for whom they have been created and governments will have to ensure that public policies are implemented honestly at the grassroots level.

Ex-boxer 'Macho' Camacho dies after shooting

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? Hector "Macho" Camacho, a Puerto Rican boxer known for skill and flamboyance in the ring as well as for a messy personal life and run-ins with the police, was declared dead on Saturday, four days after being shot in the face. He was 50.

Shot while sitting in a parked car outside a bar Tuesday with a friend in the city of Bayamon, he was declared dead at the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan. The friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, died at the scene of the shooting. Police said Mojica had nine small bags of cocaine in his pocket and a 10th bag was found open in the car.

Originally from Bayamon, just outside San Juan, Camacho was long regarded as a flashy if volatile talent, a skilled boxer who was perhaps overshadowed by his longtime foil, Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez, who would beat him in a long-awaited showdown in Las Vegas in 1992.

Camacho fought professionally for three decades, from his humble debut against David Brown at New York's Felt Forum in 1980 to an equally forgettable swansong against Sal Duran in Kissimmee, Florida, in 2010.

In between, he fought some of the biggest stars spanning two eras, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Roberto Duran.

"This is something I've done all my life, you know?" Camacho told The Associated Press after a workout in 2010. "A couple years back, when I was doing it, I was still enjoying it. The competition, to see myself perform. I know I'm at the age that some people can't do this no more."

Camacho's family moved to New York when he was young and he grew up in Spanish Harlem, which at the time was rife with crime. Camacho landed in jail as a teenager before turning to boxing, which for many kids in his neighborhood provided an outlet for their aggression.

Former featherweight champion Juan Laporte, a friend since childhood, described Camacho as "like a little brother who was always getting into trouble," but otherwise combined a friendly nature with a powerful jab.

"He's a good human being, a good hearted person," Laporte said as he waited with other friends and members of the boxer's family outside the hospital in San Juan after the shooting. "A lot of people think of him as a cocky person but that was his motto ... inside he was just a kid looking for something."

Laporte lamented that Camacho never found a mentor outside the boxing ring.

"The people around him didn't have the guts or strength to lead him in the right direction," Laporte said. "There was no one strong enough to put a hand on his shoulder and tell him how to do it."

Drug, alcohol and other problems trailed Camacho after the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

Camacho's former wife, Amy, obtained a restraining order against him in 1998, alleging he threatened her and one of their children. The couple, who had two children at the time, later divorced.

He divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida in recent years, appearing on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube.

Inside the boxing ring, Camacho flourished. He won three Golden Gloves titles as an amateur, and after turning pro, he quickly became a contender with an all-action style reminiscent of other Puerto Rican fighters.

Long promoted by Don King, Camacho won his first world title by beating Rafael Limon in a super-featherweight bout in Puerto Rico on Aug. 7, 1983. He moved up in weight two years later to capture a lightweight title by defeating Jose Luis Ramirez, and successfully defended the belt against fellow countryman Edwin Rosario.

The Rosario fight, in which the victorious Camacho still took a savage beating, persuaded him to scale back his ultra-aggressive style in favor of a more cerebral, defensive approach.

The change in style was a big reason that Camacho, at the time 38-0, lost a close split decision to Greg Haugen at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in 1991.

Camacho won the rematch to set up his signature fight against Chavez, this time at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Camacho was roundly criticized for his lack of action, and the Mexican champion won a lopsided unanimous decision to retain the lightweight title.

It was at that point that Camacho became the name opponent for other rising contenders, rather than the headliner fighting for his own glory.

He lost a unanimous decision to another young Puerto Rican fighter, Trinidad, and was soundly defeated by De La Hoya. In 1997, Camacho ended Leonard's final comeback with a fifth-round knockout. It was Camacho's last big victory even though he boxed for another decade.

"Hector was a fighter who brought a lot of excitement to boxing," said Ed Brophy, executive director of International the Boxing Hall of Fame. "He was a good champion. Roberto Duran is kind of in a class of his own, but Hector surely was an exciting fighter that gave his all to the sport."

The fighter's last title bout came in 1997 against welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya, who won by unanimous decision. Camacho's last fight was his defeat by Duran in May 2010. He had a career record of 79-6-3.
