Customers: 3 Ways to Create Customer Loyalty in Business ...

The difference between owning a business and having a successful business boils down to one key concept that is so important, I can?t talk about it enough: customer loyalty. It?s not enough to just get someone to walk through your doors or visit your website once; to have a successful business, you need that customer to keep coming back, purchase multiple products/services and ultimately, tell others about you too. So, how do you create that level of customer loyalty in your own business? Here are a few tips to get you headed in the right direction:

(1) Culture is Key
What do companies like Harley Davidson, Apple and Fender all have in common? They all have strong, unique identities tied to their businesses that extend beyond the type of products or services that they sell. And people will exclusively purchase their products (and repeatedly purchase their products!) in large part because they want to be a part of that culture. So, to re-create some of that uber-customer loyalty in your own business, think about the type of customer that would purchase your products/services and how you can create a cultural identity that would appeal to that specific customer. For example, you can host live events, special offers or online forum communities targeted towards the sensibilities of your ideal customer base. That will really help foster a sense of community and loyalty towards your business.

(2) Always Over-deliver
We?ve all heard the phrase ?Showing up is half the battle?. And while that may be true with regard to making a single sale, to generate real customer loyalty for your business, you?ll have to do more than just show up. Things like promptly returning phone calls/emails, delivering on your promises and meeting deadlines may seem simple, but by just doing those little things, you can separate your business from a lot of the others. But, take it a step further and ?over-deliver?. This can be done with genuine, non-business related follow-ups, thoughtful referrals, congratulatory social media shout-outs for your customers? personal achievements/milestones, hand-written notes and heartfelt gifts, which will really help generate a higher level of trust with your company. This trust is key for creating customer loyalty.

(3) Stand Out with Customer Service
With so much competition at every turn, having exceptional customer service can really help generate loyalty with your customers. Customers have so many choices for everything, so with everything else being equal, customer service is where your business can really stand out. Put yourself in your customers? shoes; where you would rather shop- the store where the staff is cranky, ignores you or answers your questions with a bad attitude or the store where you are welcomed with a friendly greeting, your name and order are remembered or your questions are happily answered? Even the way that your business handles customer issues or complaints can spark customer loyalty. Going above and beyond expectations when resolving issues can turn an angry customer into a loyal customer for life.

These are just a few ways to help generate customer loyalty for your business. What other tips do you have? Please share them below.

Ouya confirms game console will launch with Jelly Bean | Android ...

Android Central

The Android-powered Ouya?game console is still on schedule according to the developers' latest update, and they've confirmed that it will launch with Jelly Bean. It wouldn't be surprising to see Android 4.2 folded in before the planned launch early next year, even though that version was just unveiled a few days ago. Apparently the Ouya?folks?have been busy talking with developers over the last few months, which is key considering porting high-resolution games to the big screen and optimizing controls for Ouya's hardware will be key to its initial success.?

To that end, they've outlined a few tips for developers in advance of the December launch of the Ouya SDK. For example, the gamepad will have a single-finger touchpad and a button for system-wide access to shutting down or quitting a game, but none of the familiar buttons like back or menu. Apps should be ready to run at 720p, 1080p, and 1080i resolutions. Notifications aren't employed, and all games are effectively free (though laden with ads and in-app purchases as the game creators see fit). Finally, Ouya reminds app-makers that the system is built for Tegra, and that anyone itching to get their game optimized should test with an Nvidia-powered?Android tablet.?

As for the hardware, they've got the circuit boards printed, and are busy optimizing software and preparing dev kits for those that got in early.?

So, who backed Ouya? Any developers getting ready to make their games ready for the promising young system?

New York, New Jersey Hit Hard By Superstorm Sandy

Water washed over parts of Manhattan on Monday night, like heavy seas coming over the deck of a ship. Meanwhile, the eye of the storm came ashore in New Jersey. Steve Inskeep and Renee Montagne speak with Jeff Brady in New Jersey, Jon Hamilton in Washington and Robert Smith in New York for a look at the damage and what's to come.

RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:

It's MORNING EDITION, from NPR News. I'm Renee Montagne.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

And I'm Steve Inskeep. Good morning.

MONTAGNE: Dawn will tell us more about the damage to the East Coast. But there's little doubt that it's massive. Water from Hurricane Sandy washed over parts of Manhattan last night like heavy seas coming over the deck of a ship.

BOB MCGEE: Essentially, Manhattan south of 39th Street is without power.

MONTAGNE: That's Bob McGee. He is with the power company Con Edison. Manhattan, below 39th Street, includes many skyscrapers, and also Wall Street. Other parts of New York were lit by fire as scores of houses burned.

INSKEEP: Let's talk about this first with NPR's Robert Smith. He spent the night in New York.

And Robert, what has the night been like?

ROBERT SMITH, BYLINE: Well, I have to say, I've been driving around Manhattan south of 38th Street, and it is - it's a little terrifying, I've got say. It is pitch black on most of the streets. You cannot see a thing. It's like going through a dark forest. There's standing water in the intersections. The only light that breaks on these streets are emergency vehicles responding to some sort of emergency call or something. Water rushed into the commuter tunnels, so we have problems with our commuter tunnels, problems with water in the subway system. This is a city that it's hard to get into, hard to get out of and hard to drive around in today.

INSKEEP: I want to make sure that I'm clear. When you say commuter tunnels, there are a number of tunnels that go from other points into Manhattan, one of them being the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel or the Hugh Carey Tunnel, and those are filled with water? That's what you're being told?

SMITH: Well, we're not sure where the water stands right now. At one point, it was 11 feet of water in the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Of course, the tides go in and out. I don't know if there are tides in the tunnel. But I don't know where the water is at this point, but it's impassable. It's not open.

MONTAGNE: And, you know, are people not around at all? I mean, when you talk about tunnels being filled, I'm going to presume that people were not in cars.

SMITH: Yeah. There's nobody driving these streets. And, you know, the city's just waking up where, you know, probably 200, 300,000 people will find that they have no power whatsoever. It's a huge swath of this island that has no power. There are a few - it's odd. There are a few skyscrapers, the Goldman Sachs skyscraper, a few in Battery Park City have power, but other than that, is just blackness.

INSKEEP: Robert Smith, I want to understand the mechanics, here, because there was an announcement in many parts of Manhattan that power was going to go out, rather than it going out because of some catastrophe. Is it your understanding that power was turned off mainly because of the water to avoid a problem, and that therefore, the infrastructure is OK? Or are there truly massive problems that might take a long time to fix?

SMITH: There are two different levels of the blackout, which is there was an intentional turning off of the electricity to save some of the systems. That was in far southern Manhattan. But there was a problem with a substation on 14th Street. Some people reported an explosion. We talked to some Con Ed guys. They said that it was perhaps flooded with water. They say it's a mass -now it's going to take days to get the power back on, and that's for a swath of sort of around 14th Street. So it's hard to say which one's going to come back on.

INSKEEP: OK. Robert Smith, stay with us. We've got a lot to cover, here. Robert Smith is in Manhattan.

The eye of this huge storm came ashore in New Jersey. NPR's Jeff Brady rode out the storm about 40 miles in from the Jersey Shore in Vineland, New Jersey. He's on the line now.

And Jeff, what have you been seeing this morning?

JEFF BRADY, BYLINE: Well, it's calmed down a lot this morning. There's still some rain falling, windy outside, but nothing like what we were experiencing last night. The big concern here in Southern New Jersey is Atlantic City. I've seen reports of six feet of water in some places. The local newspaper up there reports rescuers pulled some people who chose not to evacuate off their roofs after the storm came in. And the local utility says there are still thousands of customers without electricity this morning, and it's not prepared to say when they will be able to get the power back on for everyone.

INSKEEP: You've been talking with people who rode out the storm?

BRADY: I have been. It's hard to get to a lot of those folks. Some of them are out on the barrier islands down in Cape May County. And that's also a big concern, because about 60 percent of the folks there chose not to evacuate, and authorities are pretty concerned, because even before the storm was coming in, there were reports of significant beach erosion and flooding. So they're going to have to get out there today and see how everyone there fared.

MONTAGNE: And I gather we have a clip here from Sea Isle City in New Jersey.

BRADY: Yeah. There were a few people who did leave. I talked with Rick Rock of Sea Isle City, and he was receiving word about his community from residents who stayed behind.

RICK ROCK: Some friends have been sending us pictures, and, no, we don't have anything of our own place, but the neighboring area is flooded, you know. And it depends on which part of the neighborhood you're in, you know. Atlantic City was pretty beat up, as far as we could tell - which is not far from us, probably 20 miles.

BRADY: Yeah. A lot of folks chose not to evacuate because they worried about getting back in. And Rick Rock says his wife is a nurse, so he's hoping to convince local authorities to let them come back tomorrow so that she can go back to work at the hospital and he can get to work cleaning up their house.

MONTAGNE: And, Jeff, just quickly, on the Atlantic City, I gather Chris Christie, in the middle of last night, the governor of New Jersey, gave something of a tongue-lashing to the mayor of Atlantic City, who suggested that people stay sheltered at home when the governor had suggested they leave. So there's a fair number of people have to wait till this morning, till dawn, to get any help at all.

BRADY: Yeah. That turned into a little dispute there between the mayor of Atlantic City and the governor of New Jersey. And they were sort of passing barbs back and forth on television last night. You know, the mayor of Atlantic City was saying our concern right now is making sure that our people are safe, and that's what he says they're working on.

INSKEEP: OK. Jeff Brady reporting on the Jersey Shore, where Sandy came ashore last night. Let's bring in one more voice to the conversation. NPR's Jon Hamilton has been tracking the storm from here in Washington.

And, Jon, we come to you because we now see radar images of this storm that seems to cover much of the Eastern United States. Where is it now? Where is it headed?

JON HAMILTON, BYLINE: Yeah, well, the center of this storm - and we should say that it's no longer - it looks like a cyclone with a nice, neat center to it. But the center is about 90 miles west of Pennsylvania - 90 miles west of Philadelphia. It's moving west-northwest and will turn to the north. But really the answer is this storm is everywhere. I mean, you see rain from the Carolinas, to Maine to Cleveland. You see snow in West Virginia. As you say, as you look at the map, the weather from this storm covers a huge part of the country.

INSKEEP: We talked yesterday about the possibility of this storm interacting with or combining with winter storms. Has that happened now? That's what we're seeing?

HAMILTON: Yes. In fact, it is now being referred to a superstorm, not a tropical cyclone. And that is a reflection of the fact that it has combined with winter weather to create some sort of hybrid, or now a true winter storm that acts very differently.

MONTAGNE: And dumping snow in parts - in West Virginia.

HAMILTON: Yeah. I mean, what you have is a huge, rotating storm, which is grabbing cold air way up north near Canada and pulling it down to West Virginia, combining with moisture and dropping a huge amount of snow.

INSKEEP: Jon, you used the phrase perfect storm yesterday, which, in a way, was almost comforting. Because you're saying, well, it's like this thing that happened, you know, 20-something years ago, which makes it feel like a familiar event. But I'd like to know, as this has developed, is this like anything that you've seen before or read about before in the past?

HAMILTON: It's not like anything I've ever covered before. I mean, it certainly - there have been storms, hurricanes that combined with winter storm patterns before, nor'easters, and became - the perfect storm in 1991 is one of them. Things like this have happened. But what's different about this one is the size of it, the amount of the country it covers. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.

INSKEEP: Let me just pull back to Manhattan, here, because I believe NPR's Robert Smith is still on the line.

And, Robert, let's let you take us out, here. Would you talk us through your understanding of the day ahead for Manhattan, where so much of the power is out, where there's been so much flooding? What are people trying to do? What needs to be done?

SMITH: Well, I think the first thing that all the agencies are trying to do is evaluate exactly what the problems are. Because as of right now, we don't know how bad off the subway tunnels are. We don't know how bad off the tunnels under the river to New Jersey are, or to Brooklyn. We just don't have that information. So I think there's going to be a lot of evaluating. As for the power and such, you know, this reminds me of that huge blackout we had...

MONTAGNE: Robert.

SMITH: ...oh, so many years ago. There's going to be a lot of people throwing away a lot of food and trying to figure things out.

MONTAGNE: Robert, thanks very much. Robert Smith in New York City. Also, Jeff Brady in Vineland, New Jersey and Jon Hamilton here with us in Washington, D.C. We'll be hearing from you all this morning. This is MORNING EDITION.

Survival tips for Superstorm Sandy power outages

Here are some tips on how to handle threats to or loss of electrical power:

If you still have power but it could go out at any time:

? Find out where your fuse box is located and check to ensure no fuse is tripped. Keep spare fuses handy.

? Put your medication in your refrigerator. Most meds can be kept in a closed fridge for several hours without a problem.

? Check your car's gas tank to make sure it is at least half full. Gas pumps need electricity to run, so stations may shut down.

? Carry a house key in your pocket, wallet or purse. If your power goes out and you regularly enter your home through the garage, your electric-powered garage door won't be able to open and you will need a key to get inside your front or back door.

? Make sure you have spare batteries for flashlights and matches for candles.

If your power is already out:

? Use flashlights, candles or oil lamps for light.

? Don't use kerosene heaters, barbeque grills or any outdoor-type heater indoors. These create poisonous gases.

? Try not to open your refrigerator and freezer doors too much. The food inside should stay cold for hours as long as the door is shut.

? Unplug unnecessary electronics like computers, televisions and stereos. When the power does come back on, all of these will turn on at once and can result in a power surge. But leave a light on so that you will know when the power returns.

? If it's cool, dress in layers to stay warm. Wear gloves and a knit hat. If you can't get warm, take a warm shower. Even if your hot water tank is electric, the water in it will stay warm for a few hours.

No rest for retired Long Beach police commander Josef Levy - Press ...

LONG BEACH - Retirement for most professionals is a low-key affair, with the biggest challenge often being the fight for a good tee time.

But Cmdr. Josef Levy isn't like most retired professionals.

Within less than a week of his official Oct. 10 retirement date at the Long Beach Police Department, Levy signed up for reserve duty on the force and was sworn in last week, returning to the place where his law enforcement career began more than 27 years ago.

That isn't all.

Levy has big plans for taking the Law Enforcement Cancer Support Foundation he created, along with Seal Beach Sgt. Steve Bowles, national.

Then there's Embassy Consulting Services, the consulting group Levy and his wife, Lysa Gamboa-Levy, have launched to help community leaders, police departments, schools and other organizations develop diversity training and cultural awareness programs.

The first and biggest priority for Levy in retirement, however, is his family and spending more time with his wife and four sons and his parents, who are in their 80s and who still live in Long Beach.

"My 2007 cancer diagnosis put things in perspective," Levy said. "It woke me up, made me realize that the things that were the most important, like family ... weren't getting the focus they deserved."

It was his fight against thyroid cancer that pushed him to start the cancer foundation, a nonprofit group that provides law enforcement members who have

cancer, or who have family members with cancer, with a free emotional support system, guidance and resources. Bowles and Levy came up with the idea after Bowles was diagnosed with stage 2 melanoma in 2004 and then had his cancer return again in 2008.

As he underwent treatment, Bowles said, he found there were cancer support groups for nearly every profession, but none for law enforcement.

The consulting group has grown from Levy's work to help the LBPD usher in a new approach with cultural sensitivity and hate crimes, work that came naturally to him as he drew on his own family's journey from Israel to the United States when he was a baby.

Though his first sergeant wasn't sure he was cut out for police work, telling him he was "too nice" for the job, Levy proved to be a natural at that too.

That sergeant and hundreds of other officers, family and friends turned out to wish Levy well at his retirement party, which sold out the cavernous banquet hall at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. Among the crowd were local dignitaries, including City Councilman Dee Andrews and Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, who celebrated Levy's years in the police department and his impact on the city.

During his tenure with the police department Levy worked numerous assignments, including Patrol, Narcotics, Gang Enforcement, Internal Affairs, SWAT negotiations and media relations.

His former partner, and also now retired Lt. Ty Hatfield, recalled the genesis of Levy's "Crazy Larry" character, which saw Levy dress up in a wig and hat and adopt an accent and a limp to go out and buy and sell drugs undercover.

Of course Hatfield couldn't give Levy too much grief, as he was the one who bought what turned out to be stolen Lakers tickets for himself, Levy and two other officers in the 1990s. It was a move that made headlines in the Press-Telegram, and the article was among many laid out at the retirement party memorializing Levy's storied career.

Levy and Hatfield made countless arrests in Narcotics, they both recalled, and that was when Levy began to realize arrests aren't always the best solution for crime.

"I started to realize the vicious cycle that happens with so many people, and I realized that making all these arrests was not the only strategy there was to police work," Levy said. "It also gave me a little empathy and helped me realize that a lot of people we were arresting suffered from mental illness, sickness, poverty and bad fortune."

And so began Levy's ascension through the ranks as he was promoted to sergeant, then lieutenant and finally commander in charge of the West Division. As he moved forward, he pushed to address issues of inequity within the force and in the community, and he is credited by many with being a major part of changes in police culture. The program that was developed for the department has been named the "Cadillac" of diversity training for law enforcement by the state Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training, or POST.

Perhaps more importantly, it was that work, which saw him collaborate with what was then known as the National Conference of Christian and Jews - and is now known as the California Conference for Equality and Justice - that introduced him to Lysa.

"That's how my wife and I met. She was a facilitator with the NCCJ, I was a facilitator with the police department," Levy said. "So human relations does work."

Their success with bringing the police department and the community together through diversity training and outreach was evident Thursday night as Westside community group members mingled with representatives from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Long Beach Parks and Recreation employees, Levy's family and fellow officers, all of whom came bearing thanks, and a few tears.

Even Deputy Police Chief Robert Luna had to stop at one point when talking to the crowd about their work, and friendship, as he grew emotional.

"You have made us laugh and you have made us cry, and you have definitely made us better," Luna said.

The Passionate Foodie: Wines Of the Southern Hemisphere: The ...

It is now autumn, with a brisk chill to the air, and the winter season will arrive in a couple months. We often don't think about the fact that in the Southern Hemisphere it is now spring, and they are looking forward to summer in a couple months. Near the end of our winter, grape harvest will begin in countries like Argentina and South Africa. How much do you know about the wine regions of the Southern Hemisphere?

You can learn more about these regions in a newly released book,?Wines of the Southern Hemisphere: The Complete Guide, written by Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen, the World Wine Guys?(Sterling Epicure, October 2012, $24.95). It is a 580 page hardcover book, broken down into seven chapters, each covering a different wine producing country. DeSimone and Jenssen are wine, spirits, food and travel writers and are the Entertaining & Lifestyle Contributing Editors for Wine Enthusiast Magazine. They have also written for numerous other magazines and previously published The Fire Island Cookbook.

Their book covers seven countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and Uruguay. Each chapter is broken down into five sections: a History & Overview, Major Grape Varieties, Wine Regions, Recipes and In Their Own Words. The greatest bulk of the book consists of information about the wineries of these regions.?Australia and New Zealand have the longest chapters, each over 100 pages. It is great to see coverage of Brazil and Uruguay, two countries which seem to rarely be addressed anywhere else.?

This book is primarily geared toward the novice wine lover, providing more of a general overview rather than a comprehensive and detailed exploration of these regions. A more advanced wine lover may want much more detail than is provided in sections like the brief?History & Overview. Personally, I would have liked to see a more extensive exploration of the history of these countries. The Major Grape Varieties is useful, though I would have also liked to see some information on the lesser known grapes too, to see which new grapes may be up and coming.

The Wine Regions section, the largest part of each chapter, discusses each country's wine regions and then lists many wineries in those various regions, providing basic information about the wineries with a few tasting notes of their wines. This is more of a starting point about these wineries, a sampling that might intrigue you to seek more information elsewhere. ? ?

It is the other two sections of each chapter which most intrigued me. Each chapter contains one to four Recipes, usually provided by the wineries, and often represent regional specialties. For example, you will find a recipe for Familia Zuccardi's?Argentine Empanadas. I have visited the Zuccardi winery and greatly enjoyed their empanadas, so it was cool to see this recipe in this book. As another example, you will find a recipe for the Pisco Sour cocktail in the Chile chapter, another item I enjoyed while visiting Chile. From Bellingham Braai Pie (South Africa) to Waipara Lamb Chops (New Zealand), there is much to entice the food lover in this section.

The final section of each chapter is In Their Own Words, a series of interviews with wine personalities from each region. You will find fascinating interviews with people such as Laura Catena of Argentina (winemaker/owner of Catena Zapata), to Philip Van Zyl of South Africa (editor of Platter's Guide). This section will appeal to wine lovers of all levels, providing intriguing insights into the wine industry of each country. These interviews captivated my attention and I am sure other wine lovers, from novices to advanced, will also find much of interest and value.

At $24.95, this hefty book offers an excellent value as an introduction to the wine regions of the Southern Hemisphere. Though primarily for novice wine lovers, there are sections, like Recipes and In Their Own Words, which will appeal to more advanced wine lovers too. The chapters on Brazil and Uruguay also provide much needed information on these countries, information which is tough to find in other wine books. With the holiday season, consider this book as a gift for your wine lover friends.

Sony goes Redhunting with PMWF55 and PMWF5 pro CineAlta 4K Super 35mm sensor camcorders

Having seen some of its high-end cinema camera thunder stolen by the likes of Red and Arri, Sony has just launched a pair of CineAlta PL-mount cameras with brand new Super 35mm sensors: The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Though both pack 4K CMOS imagers, there are some major differences -- the higher-end PMW-F55 has a global shutter, wider color gamut and can capture 4k, 2k or HD video internally, while the PMW-F5 records 2k and HD natively with a rolling shutter (4k requires an optional RAW recorder, below).

Depending on the level of quality you want, there are several ways to capture video to each camcorder. MPEG-4 H.264 video or Sony's SR MPEG-4 SStP can be recorded onto Sony's new SxS PRO+ media, or if RAW quality is desired, there's the new AXS-R5 Access Memory System for 2K / 4K RAW capture -- which will also work with the current NEX-FS700. Using the latter system, the PMW-F5 is capable of grabbing up to 120fps slow motion RAW HD video, while the PMW-F55 can capture 240fps at 2k, putting it squarely in Epic-X territory. The new camcorders will arrive in February 2013, and while Sony hasn't outed pricing yet, it'll likely be well under the flagship 4k CineAlta F65's formidable $65k sticker. Check the PR after the break to get the entire technical skinny.

Montclair and Hurricane Sandy: What Are You Cooking, Eating, Drinking

BY Holly Korus, Liz George ?|? Monday, Oct 29, 2012 10:53am ?|? COMMENTS (13)

Hunkering down during Hurricane Sandy is safer than going out and trying to brave the storm. However, some eateries are open in Montclair? for now.

Plum on Park Street, is open, warm and cozy, says our intrepid Holly Korus, and the restaurant will stay open until the storm gets more dangerous. Villa Victoria in Montclair is open and delivering today ? they say until they lose power. Raymonds will close at 11 a.m. today. Toast and Belgiovines on Bloomfield Ave. were both open as of this posting; Starbucks in Upper Montclair was closed as is Whole Foods. Pathmark is open. Over at Cuban Pete?s, they are securing palm trees. Quick Check, Plato Cubano and Hot Bagels on Valley Road were open. Over at Watchung Plaza, Wahchung Chinese, Sunrise Bagel, Cafe Clair, Watchung Deli, Townhouse Wine, Rosarios ? open. On Walnut Street, Red Eye Cafe, Ray?s Luncheonette and Panzano Pizza ? open. On Grove ? Grove Liquor, Marlboro Bakery, Golden Dragon Chinese, Grove Pharmacy and Grove Deli. In Upper Montclair, A&P, Kings, Beyond the Bagel, Soho Pizza and Sandwich Theory were all open, but Brick Lane wasn?t taking any chances.

Plenty of readers said they stocked up on wine ? of course, there?s always Holly?s Hurricane Cocktail. What to do with the food you have? Take Back The Kitchen?s Alma Schneider offers these tips for saving your food during a Frankenstorm. The Center for Disease Control has these food safety tips in event of a power failures. Applegate Farm has dry ice available. Have you been cooking up a storm to get rid of as much food as possible? What non-cook/no refrigeration needed supplies (here are mine ? plus, almond butter and apples) did you stock up on?

A special seat at the antique dining tables of Capesthorne Hall ...

Capesthorne Hall is holding a three-day Christmas crafts event at the end of November, with singers and musicians adding seasonal flair as visitors wander around the Victorian balloon backed dining chairs and antique bookcases.

Close to the Lancashire border, six miles west of Macclesfield, Capesthorne Hall is a magnificent Jacobean-style mansion dating from 1719. The home of the Bromley Davenports since 1726, everything in the house was collected by previous family members, with particularly fine collections of English, European, American and Far Eastern antique furniture. It is very different to the roped-off museum-style layout seen in some stately homes. From the Jacobean antique dining tables of the entrance hall to the ebony sofa of the saloon, each room is furnished to be used ? with a unique warmth and ambience that tells visitors this is very much a family home.

While functions and corporate events take place at Capesthorne throughout the year, it is normally closed to the public from the end of October. However, on 23rd November the Bromley Davenports will be opening the doors for a special three-day Christmas and Crafts event, giving visitors a unique glimpse of the marble fireplaces and antique chests of a family-owned country house dressed up for the festive season. During the tour, visitors will be entertained by local choirs and musicians, enjoy festive snacks and drinks in the Butler?s Pantry, and shop for hand-made craft and food gifts in the marquee.

Nothing looks more festive than a set of Victorian balloon backed dining chairs around an antique dining table ; ask a Preston antique dealer for examples.

M.I.B III (Mike in Bangkok) Part 3 ? By Mike | Big Mango Bar

MIB I
MIB II

I spent the rest of the day pottering around in my room. About 8 pm I was getting hungry and wanted to go into town to feast. I rang Miss Siriwan to see if she wanted to join me. With free food and drinks on offer of course she did. I had met Siriwan about 5 years ago when I was living in Ramkumheng and she was attending the local university. I would frequent Ram Soi 65, which has about 10-12 bars that cater to the students. Places like ?Fun Fact? and ?Nior? were packed most night with fresh young uni muff. For most of the girls it had been their first time away from home and they had the freedom to do as they pleased. You don?t really see many foreigners there but anyone with a basic understanding of Thai and a couple of bucks in their pocket won?t be going home alone. Or at the very least you will go home with a few new phone numbers to cultivate a relationship over the coming weeks.

Siriwan is about 25 now and has long dyed hair that has had a ?wave? put through it. Originally from Chiang Rai, she has quite round eyes for an Asian and pure white skin. If she didn?t move and keeps her mouth shut long enough she actually look like a porcelain doll. Siriwan now works in some apparel store in Siam Paragon and by 9pm she was getting out of the taxi at Sukhumvit Soi 11. I brought her out on the pretenses that I had booked a table at the trendy eatery ?Oscars?. But in reality I wanted a feed of fish n chips from the New Zealand shop ?Snapper?, and he that holds the purse string eats wherever the fuck he wants.

After a great meal..?for me anyway, and a bottle of wine we dropped into Cheap Charlies. I don?t really get this place. So after one drink we were on our way.

Siriwan had heard of the show at Check Inn 99 so we drop by and listened to a number of sets. She started working her way through the cocktail list whilst I remained faithful to Jack. After an hour or two she had a nice glow on her cheeks that meant tonight I would again be up to my nuts in Asian guts.

I make some excuse to leave and we start heading up Soi 4. We only get as far as the new Hillary 4 when I?m grabbed from behind by the Mama San. Mama Oi had worked in the original Stumble Inn bar but with all the changes she was now employed by H4. She gets us a table and drinks are ordered. She has a long look at Siriwan and I politely tell her to fuck off and leave her alone. She wont be recruiting tonight. The drinks arrive and Ma Oi brings out a plate of fried chicken wings for us to eat.

Between the wine at dinner, cocktails and the chicken wings Siriwan is starting to wobble on her seat. It was time to get her into a taxi and home before she passes out and consensual sex becomes statutory rape.

We make it home without her barffing in the taxi. Through the doors in to my condo she starts throwing off her clothes and is standing there with her back to me in only her underwear. Her long flowing hair cascaded over her shoulders and down her slender back. She turns around and she looks fucking stunning, I hadn?t tip toed through her panties in over 6 months and I forgotten how fuckn hot she was. I remember the first couple of times I banged her. I had taken her to the Dusit D2 in Pattaya, I was doing her doggy style whilst looking in the wall length mirror thinking, ?what a luck little boy am I?

She smiles and starts to walk towards me and I just know this is going to be a memorable night. Mainly because she is off her tits and im still able to stand up by myself. Anal could be on the cards tonight. She takes another step towards me and then stops dead in her tracks. Her eyes bulge, then her cheeks bulges. She makes a desperate grab at her mouth but its two late, a torrent of Merlot squirted between her fingers as she turned and made a mad dash to the toilet. Luckily she missed puking all over the washable towels and managed to thunder chuck all over my nice clean cream-colored walls.

Anal wasn?t off the cards just yet.

She then spent the next 10 minutes throwing up 1800 baht worth of wine and 200 baht cocktails in to my toilet bowl. I just grabbed her a new toothbrush and toothpaste handed it to her and went to bed??Anal and sex were defiantly off the cards tonight. Could be worse, I could be French.

The next morning Siriwan wakes up in a complete shit state, luckily it was her day off and she thought that she could have a lay in. But I had other plans; after getting a morning glory leg over, I get her up, threw her ass into the shower and made her get dressed. I was on a mission. I was off on the next leg of my pub-crawl. Flying and driving from Chiang Mai in the North to Rayong in the South. Siriwan comes with me to Don Muang Airport. I slip her a couple of bucks for the taxi ride home and head through security. Next stop Chiang Mai.

Self-compassion increases self-improvement motivation.

Pers Soc Psychol Bull. 2012 Sep;38(9):1133-43

Authors: Breines JG, Chen S

Abstract
Can treating oneself with compassion after making a mistake increase self-improvement motivation? In four experiments, the authors examined the hypothesis that self-compassion motivates people to improve personal weaknesses, moral transgressions, and test performance. Participants in a self-compassion condition, compared to a self-esteem control condition and either no intervention or a positive distraction control condition, expressed greater incremental beliefs about a personal weakness (Experiment 1); reported greater motivation to make amends and avoid repeating a recent moral transgression (Experiment 2); spent more time studying for a difficult test following an initial failure (Experiment 3); exhibited a preference for upward social comparison after reflecting on a personal weakness (Experiment 4); and reported greater motivation to change the weakness (Experiment 4). These findings suggest that, somewhat paradoxically, taking an accepting approach to personal failure may make people more motivated to improve themselves.

Ancestral Discoveries: Genealogy Served on a Silver Platter

Ever wonder what it would feel like to just be handed all the information on your family?? You know, kind of like what happened on episodes of Who Do You Think You Are? and Finding Your Roots:? family trees, death certificates, photographs, military discharge papers, what have you.? But that never really happens, right?
Meet my friend Carol.

Over the years it has become a running joke between us.? Every so often, a family member contacts her and says, "Oh, I'd like to send you a copy of all the research I've done."? Then she receives another well put together and well documented part of her family tree, often with supporting materials.? She already has several copies of different trees and boxes of original letters and documents from both sides of her family.

She was just given another bonanza.

She received two large envelopes full of documents and a USPS Medium Flat Rate box of photo albums and loose photos.? Most of the photos are even labeled!

Among the documents are:
? eight family trees for various lines
? a typed transcript of her great-uncle interviewing her great-grandmother, including the story of how her family was instrumental in the founding of a town in Iowa
? two copies of a treatise on one of her family names
? two copies of a book about the church her ancestor established in the 1600's
? a photo of her grandfather's high school graduating class from 1917
? her grandfather's entire probate file, including correspondence

? original documents from when a relative legally changed his name
? her grandmother's college diploma and teaching certificate
? an original copy of her grandmother's death certificate from Spain (which probably would have been difficult to replace)
? original U.S. Army discharge papers
? a "whole pile" of family letters
? newspaper clippings
? church bulletins
? visitor books from funeral services

Carol's aunt (her mother's sister) collected all of this information.? She has moved to assisted living, and the aunt's daughter had to clean out the home.? This cousin talked with her brothers and her own children, but no one wanted all of the genealogical stuff.? Rather than just throw everything out, she asked around the family to find someone who did want it (hooray!).? Carol got all of this because, unlike her friend, when these items needed a home, she recognized their value.

Of course, now everything needs to be taken care of -- sorted out, put in archival boxes, separated with nonreactive paper.? And some of this is duplicates of what she already has.? But I know that Carol is up to the task.? Now if she were only more interested in genealogy ....

What was that?? No, of course I'm not jealous.? Whatever made you think so?

As US and allies shift away from Afghan combat, some see stalemate even as Taliban weaken

KABUL - A new chapter of the Afghanistan war is opening with a slimmed-down Western force doing more advising than fighting, a resilient Taliban showing little interest in peace talks, and Americans tempted to pull the plug on a conflict now in its 12th year.

A decisive end seems nowhere in sight.

The allied offensive that just ended, spearheaded by an influx of 30,000 U.S. troops, hammered the Taliban in its southern strongholds. Yet the insurgency persists as the American-led international military coalition hands off security responsibilities to the Afghans before exiting in two years.

"We are probably headed for stalemate in 2014," says Stephen Biddle, a George Washington University political science professor who has advised U.S. commanders in Afghanistan and Iraq. If that is the case, the U.S. will have to pump billions of dollars a year into Afghanistan for decades to prevent its collapse, Biddle says.

What began in October 2001 under the Pentagon's hopeful banner of "Operation Enduring Freedom" has hardened into enduring resistance. The Taliban take heavy losses but regenerate as fast as they fall. They also maintain links to a range of other extremist groups, including al-Qaida and the Pakistan-based Haqqani network.

U.S. commanders say with confidence that their war campaign is on track, and President Barack Obama seemed to agree in his debate last Monday with Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

"There's no reason why Americans should die when Afghans are perfectly capable of defending their own country," Obama said.

Yet the path forward is dotted with question marks:

?Will Afghanistan's security forces be capable of holding off the Taliban on their own? Afghan forces outnumber the Taliban by more than 10-to-1, but currently not a single Afghan army battalion is capable of operating in the field without American advisers.

?If the Afghan forces falter, will the U.S. extend its stay or send in reinforcements to avoid a Taliban takeover?

?Will the U.S.-led military coalition hold together even as France and others dash for the exits in coming months?

?Will enough Afghans come to embrace the corrupt government in Kabul as a preferred alternative to the militant Taliban?

?Will the Afghans manage a peaceful transfer of power after a presidential election scheduled for 2014, in which President Hamid Karzai cannot run again? The independent International Crisis Group warned this month of a "precipitous slide toward state collapse" unless steps are taken soon to prevent a repeat of the "chaos and chicanery" of the 2009 presidential election and the 2010 parliamentary vote.

U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, who championed the additional American troops, remains optimistic.

"We've come too far, we've fought too many battles, we have spilled too much blood not to finish the job that we are all about," Panetta said in Brussels this month after meeting with his counterparts from NATO nations.

The "job" Panetta referenced is no longer to defeat the Taliban before 2015 or to eradicate al-Qaida in its Afghan redoubts, but to create an Afghan security force that can at least hold the substantial gains achieved by the U.S.-led international alliance.

It's not even clear whether the U.S. still expects to get peace negotiations with the Taliban started by 2015.

U.S. officials have said for years that the Taliban were unlikely to talk peace unless they felt their battlefield chances were slipping away. Those chances did take a heavy hit when the fresh American forces came on, yet the Taliban still show no appetite for negotiations.

Nevertheless, coalition military officers still speak of softening up the Taliban.

"Our task is to put our fist down the throat of the Taliban and squeeze his heart so that he will talk," said Australian Maj. Gen. Stephen Day, the coalition's chief of plans. He argues that the additional troops made the Taliban "a bit more quiescent," if not yet willing to negotiate.

Panetta and others assert that the troop increase also drove the Taliban farther from population centres and created an opportunity for the Afghan army and police to grow in numbers and experience.

The U.S. now has 66,000 troops in Afghanistan, joined by about 37,000 from allied countries. Decisions on how many more U.S. troops to withdraw next year won't come before the presidential election, but there are abundant signs that additional reductions will be ordered at some stage in 2013.

Army Brig. Gen. John Charlton, a deputy commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan's eastern provinces, says he is emphasizing to Afghan military leaders that the time has passed when they can expect the coalition to bear the lion's share of the fighting.

"Starting now, you've got to step it up," he said he's now telling them.

Charlton and other U.S. commanders interviewed recently in Kabul and at several remote outposts in eastern Afghanistan said they see marked improvement in the performance and confidence of Afghan forces this year.

Roger Noble, an Australian brigadier general who is a deputy operations chief for the international coalition, said he sees "pockets of excellence," but others see mediocrity and worse in the wider pool of Afghan forces. Noble acknowledged that Afghan soldiers are sometimes disillusioned with superiors whose corruption saps morale.

Some U.S. commanders express worry that no matter how much better the Afghan forces get before most Western forces go home in 2014, it could all be for naught if the Afghan government fails to strengthen its legitimacy in the eyes of ordinary Afghans.

Adding to a sense of unease is anger over a rising number of killings of U.S. and coalition troops by Afghan soldiers and police out of personal pique or in apparent sympathy with the Taliban. At least 57 coalition personnel, mostly Americans, have been killed so far this year in 40 "insider attacks." The latest was Thursday, when two U.S. servicemen were killed by a gunman in an Afghan police uniform.

After a spurt of insider attacks in August and September, one of Congress' most vocal advocates of pursuing the war, U.S. Sen. John McCain was so fed up that he called for a re-evaluation of the Obama administration's troop withdrawal plan, saying it might need to be speeded up. He later said that was a bad option.

American public support for the war has dropped precipitously during Obama's term in the White House.

A Pew Research Center poll in early October found that 60 per cent of respondents favoured removing U.S. troops from Afghanistan as soon as possible, with 35 per cent saying they should stay until the country is stable. That's a nearly complete reversal from a September 2008 Pew Research poll that showed 33 per cent wanted troops out as soon as possible and 61 per cent said they should stay until the country has stabilized.
