Killer of hard-working family man to spend rest of life in ... - Crime Blog

A bank robber who gunned down a security guard during one of his heists was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison Wednesday morning in federal court.

Enrique Lopez had been facing a possible death sentence for the murder of Cresencio Borquez in West Oak Cliff in 2009 during one of several bank robberies he committed in the area with an accomplice.

But Lopez, a Mexican citizen, agreed in June to plead guilty to robbing four area banks in five different heists over a nine-month period in 2009. Lopez pleaded guilty to a total of 11 counts, including the murder of Borquez during one of the robberies.

The life sentences handed down to her father?s killer did not alleviate the pain Mercedes Borquez said she has to live with.

?It?s not fair that he took my dad away from us,? she told U.S. District Judge Barbara M.G. Lynn. ?My dad?s not there. He?s in a grave. I can?t see him.?

She and her brother, Joel Borquez, told Lynn their father gave up his education to work up to 60 hours a week to provide for his family after becoming a U.S. citizen.

?All he did was work,? said Mercedes Borquez, adding that her father didn?t even have time to enjoy his only grandson, who is now 3.

Joel Borquez said he will never forget his father and what he did for their family.

?He gave us a great example. He was our everything,? he said.

Cresencio Borquez, 46, a Brinks security guard and married father of two,?arrived in an armored truck at a Chase bank on Fort Worth Avenue in September 2009 to load an ATM with money, according to documents in the case. As Borquez walked to the machine with a bag of money, Lopez grabbed him from behind and placed a stolen .45 caliber Glock pistol to his head.

Borquez pushed pushed Lopez away and Lopez shot him twice. Lopez then fired at Borquez?s partner in the armored truck before fleeing in a Honda Accord.

He and his accomplice in the robberies, an El Salvadoran citizen named Jesus Sandoval, were arrested in October 2009 after robbing a Chase bank in Balch Springs that was celebrating its grand opening with 40 people inside, according to court documents.

They had led police on a high-speed chase that ended when their getaway car got stuck in mud, court documents state.

Sandoval has pleaded not guilty to various counts he is facing and has requested a trial.

Lynn told the victim?s family that she wished she had an opportunity to meet him.

?His memory will give you comfort,? she told them.

She then asked Lopez if he wanted to say something. He declined.

Lynn called it ?reprehensible? that Lopez refused to give police the name of his accomplice.

?Mr. Lopez, you committed a horrible act,? she told him.

Lynn told him it?s not too late for him to take a different path in prison, where he will likely spend the rest of his life. She said she hoped he would ?live a life that will give something good back to society.?
