Last week's 2013 International CES filled Las Vegas's convention center, global headlines, and social media with the latest gadgets and some unexpected celebrities.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud, together with Ignite Social Media, recapped the hottest topics from the week-long event, as seen through social media.
The show earned a total 927,190 Twitter mentions, peaking around 9 a.m. on Jan. 9, precisely as the Samsung keynote kicked off. The speech featured the flexible Youm display protoype, the Exynos Octa 5 processor, and a guest appearance by former President Bill Clinton. Samsung was lifted to top talked-about status, beating companies like Google (20,000 mentions), Apple, (approximately 16,000 mentions), and Microsoft (about 15,000 mentions) - none of which really had an official presence at CES.
Overall, televisions dominated conversation, with talk of Ultra HD screen resolutions and a possible future for 3D.
In the year of the 4K TV, Samsung and Sony easily garnered the most buzz, leading online conversation with about 55,000 mentions and 40,000 mentions, respectively. Samsung's 4K Ultra HD TV also snagged a 24 percent piece of the five most-talked-about products, according to Salesforce.
Additionally, Sony's Xperia Z Mobile Phone (pictured) was the most popular conversation topic, monopolizing 44 percent of the Internet discussion. Rightly so, according to PCMag analyst Alex Colon, who got a hands-on look at the attractive phone during the show.
"I'd like to nominate Sony's new Xperia Z for prettiest phone at CES," he said last week. "Covered all in glass and available in either black or white, it brings to mind a certain phone from Apple, but still stands out among the rest of the current Android competition."
The Razor Edge, Nvidia Shield, and Ford Applink 2013 also stood out, taking the last 15, 10, and 7 percent, respectively, of the most-discussed products. Meanwhile, LG, Intel, Qualcomm, and Panasonic also garnered a lot of talk, earning between 10,000 and 20,000 mentions across the board last week.
Aside from Clinton's surprise cameo, a number of A-listers showed up to the show, including rapper 50 Cent, who was mentioned 2,666 times, more than artist will.i.am (1,759 mentions) and Maroon 5 (1,401 mentions), which performed at Qualcomm's bizarre keynote. Tech news site CNET was also a star in its own right last week, standing as the No. 1 most-retweetable entity, according to Salesforce - likely due, in part, to the controversy surrounding the Dish Hopper.
